26,000 Fans Celebrate the Biathlon World Cup in Hochfilzen

Spannende Wettkämpfe

Under perfect winter conditions, 26,000 biathlon fans once again enjoyed a breathtaking World Cup weekend in snowy Hochfilzen. Although sporting success from an Austrian perspective was limited, the thrilling competitions, strong media response, and not least the significantly expanded side program resulted in an entirely positive overall assessment.

Already over the summer it had become apparent that demand for the Biathlon World Cup in Hochfilzen would increase once again this year. As a result, more than 26,000 spectators flocked to the races last weekend and were not disappointed. The internationally diverse fan community witnessed exciting competitions that once again kept everyone on the edge of their seats right up to the final shooting. From a sporting point of view, however, there was little cause for celebration for Austrian fans. Following a brilliant season opener in Östersund, the Ski Austria stars were unable to build on their performances in Hochfilzen. Although the women’s relay team was on course for a podium finish for long stretches, they ultimately had to settle for eighth place. Anna Juppe delivered the strongest individual Austrian result with 18th place in the sprint, which also marked the best red-white-red placing in the individual races. This did nothing to dampen the atmosphere along the course. “The home race is always something very special and has its own rules. Even if the results don’t fully reflect it, we can take a lot of positives away, and the atmosphere here in Hochfilzen is always absolutely fantastic,” said Lisa Hauser, who had shone with a victory in the pursuit in Östersund.

Outstanding Media Response

What applied to attendance figures was equally evident in the media sector. The press center was filled to capacity. Numerous journalists, photographers, and news agencies sent reports and images from wintry Hochfilzen around the globe. Television broadcasters from a wide range of countries showcased the Pillersee Valley far beyond Austria’s borders. Accordingly, the chairman of the regional tourism association expressed his satisfaction. “The World Cup in Hochfilzen is the perfect opening for us. The images of the wintery Pillersee Valley reach our markets and effectively signal the start of the season, which in turn boosts demand. In addition, this year we were able to delight guests throughout the entire region with a significantly expanded side program,” said TVB chairman Markus Kogler. This year’s program included, alongside the ORF Tirol stage in the fan village featuring DJ Alex and several surprise star guests, the Kronehit Berg Beat Tour as well as live concerts by Ross Antony, Petra Frey, CARO (the Helene Fischer tribute), Die Jungen Zillertaler, and many more in Hochfilzen and Fieberbrunn. Looking ahead to the 2028 World Championships, these side events, organized under the leadership of the tourism association, are set to expand even further.

Flawless Organization

From planning to execution, Organizing Committee Director Franz Berger and his well-coordinated team once again ensured optimal conditions at this year’s World Cup. Around 450 volunteers contributed to a smooth process throughout the weekend, from arrival logistics to a perfect fan experience. With the “Schools Day,” which attracted numerous classes from the Kitzbühel district and neighboring regions, the next generation was also inspired by the sport of biathlon. Athletes and media alike found ideal conditions in the state-of-the-art stadium, while the course itself was presented in excellent condition. “Our goal is to offer fans and locals alike a special weekend every year and to create optimal conditions for athletes and media. We achieved that once again this year, and we can all be very proud of it,” Franz Berger concluded.
