The last bullets are shot, the medals are handed out and the fans left - on behalf of the IBU board members president Anders Besseberg and Vice President of information Ivor Lehotan used their chance to review the past 11 days.
Two times Mass Start, perfect weather, awesome scenery – a fascinating final of these World Championships that will go down in biathlons history.
After the battle for the third position at the men’s Relay the Austrian biathletes Daniel Mesotitsch, Julian Eberhard, Simon Eder and Dominik Landertinger received their well deserved medals at the Medal Plaza in Hochfilzen. With the cheering home crowd the bronze medal was celebrated just like a victory.
It was 10 days the Austrian biathlon fans needed to be patient before Daniel Mesotitsch, Julian Eberhard, Simon Eder and Dominik Landertinger finished third and managed to bring home the first medal for the Austrians. A medal shining just like a golden one! For the first time since 2008 the Russian athletes took gold in the men’s Relay – 5,8 seconds in front of France.
Like expected - together with shining star Laura Dahlmeier the German girls were given gold.
In snowy Hochfilzen the women had a great showdown at the 4x6-km-Relay and in the end the German’s won again.
The Austrian Ski Association invited guests to thank them for their help – friends, co-workers, VIP-guests, the IBU president Anders Besseberg and Hochfilzen’s mayor Konrad Walk followed the invitation. In his opening speech ÖSV General Secretary Dr. Klaus Leistner and ÖSV Vice President Anton Leikam criticised the allocation process of the WC in Meran. The IBU president though took the chance to express his respect and gratitude for the event organizers.
After the sensational victory of US athlete Lowell Bailey in the Men’s 20K Individual the emotional award ceremony was celebrated at the Medal Plaza Thursday evening.
Extremely thrilling Men’s 20K Individual
Three days before the end of these Biathlon World Championships in Hochfilzen, the Men’s 20K Individual ended with a sensation! In an extremely thrilling competition US athlete Lowell Bailey unexpectedly won the very first biathlon Gold medal for the USA.
